How Seasons Work Around the World
Seasons change throughout the year depending on where you are in the world. While many people are familiar with spring, summer, autumn, and winter, these seasons do not occur at the same time in every country. In fact, seasons are opposite between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
The Earth is tilted at an angle of approximately 23.5 degrees. As it orbits the sun, this tilt causes different parts of the planet to receive varying amounts of sunlight during the year. When a region is tilted toward the sun, it experiences warmer temperatures and longer days, which we call summer. When it is tilted away from the sun, it receives less sunlight, resulting in colder temperatures and shorter days, known as winter.
In the Northern Hemisphere, countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and most of Europe experience winter from December to February, spring from March to May, summer from June to August, and autumn from September to November. Meanwhile, countries in the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and parts of South America, experience the opposite seasons at the same time.
This means when it is summer in Australia, it is winter in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. Understanding this difference is important for travel, business, and communication, especially when planning across multiple time zones and regions.
